A while ago I shared my morning routine, and thought it would be fun to share my nighttime routine, too! I also had posted recently what I do in my Insta stories and got a bunch of questions so here it is in more detail 🙂
While a morning routine helps to create a sense of purpose and energy for the day, a nighttime routine helps me to end the day on a positive, productive note as well as wind down and calm down. I am a bit of a night owl so having intentional steps to get me in sleep mode and signal the end of the day is super necessary.
Once the kids are in bed, these are things I do for myself and also for the house and the family.
S H O P T H E P O S T
On weekdays, I pack the girls’ lunches the night before. CORRECTION – I pack Reese’s lunch and Maddix packs her own; it’s part of her nighttime chores. The benefit to that is twofold – less for me to do and more responsibility for her to practice. It’s also been a learning experience over the years for her to know what constitutes a healthy packed lunch (colorful, varied in textures, and fresh) and not be lazy and grab what is quickest and easiest because a 12 yr old will do that (eg. two fig bars, a bag of crackers and a fruit strip does NOT constitute a healthy lunch.) I also fill everyone’s water bottles and have those ready in the fridge. Because waiting for the water bottle to fill when you are running late in the morning is totally NO.
I also portion out Russ’ and my lunches many weeks, especially if it’s a busy week. He’ll grab these in the morning and put them in his own lunchbox (a meal-prep cooler bag that stack containers up inside) and he says it’s been a game changer because this ensures he actually eats throughout the day. Yes, he actually FORGETS to eat. I mean, wish I had that problem!
Get drinks ready for the next day
This is something I do to intentionally set the tone for the next day, and also has just become a little ritual. After I have cleaned up the kitchen, I go to our drink station and put a coffee mug on the Nespresso like I’m going to make a cup right then and there. Then I put two pods next to the machine for the morning. The pods live literally right in the drawer next to the machine, but having it out and visible just makes me feel more like AM GOING TO DRINK COFFEE TOMORROW, HERE IT IS.
Then, I grab my Starbucks straw cup (Venti) and cold-brew some tea for the next day. Which means I 1) full the cup with water, 2) put a teabag in it, and 3) put lid on and put in fridge. That is it. Cold-brew tea. I made it up? I alternate between Tazo Passion tea and Tazo Green and Mint herbal tea. Something about knowing this ready and waiting for me to grab and head out in the morning gives me satisfaction. This is what I drink as I run around in the morning whether it’s heading to the gym or running errands or meeting up with people or going to appointments.
I then also grab a glass of water and put lemon in it for taking upstairs for the night. I actually keep this on my nightstand for the morning because I like to put lemon water into my system first thing in the morning and this way I have it right there the moment I wake up without having to go downstairs (like it’s a trek or something – it’s not lol!)
Wipe down kitchen & clear off all counters
A must. It literally stresses me out to have cluttered or dirty counters in general but especially at the end of the day before bed. A clean kitchen truly makes a difference in how the whole house feels and looks. It doesn’t take long to put everything back in its place and I actually enjoy the process. Having a counter spray that smells good helps, too. It’s seriously the little things in life that make a difference!
Spray essential oils
After lunches and drinks are made and the kitchen is cleaned, I head upstairs to get myself ready for bed. Sounds basic but I truly love my oils and I really only use three kinds: lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus. When I get upstairs I put lavender into the diffuser in our master bedroom and set the timer to turn off after we fall asleep. It’s the best scent in the world and I totally believe in its calming properties. Also, if I’m taking a shower at nighttime before I get into my skincare and self-tan, I’ll spray some in there, too (in the mornings I spray eucalyptus for a spa-vibe.)
Take time with skincare
I cherish my skincare products and make the process something I “treat” myself to. I literally look forward to it every night! I’ll detail my current skincare products and routine in a separate post but last month I started using these products from Emme Diane and you guys. My skin has NEVER been better. So I cannot wait to get that post up to give you all the details!! Emme and her products have transformed my skin. In the meantime, Emme is offering all my friends and followers a DISCOUNT CODE! Use “Mika10” for 10% off products!
I maintain a (fake) tan year round, and like to put it on at night so I wake up with a tan. I do this about twice a week. Over many, many years and countless bottles, lotions, sprays, airbrushes, etc., this summer I found THE holy grail of self tanner. It’s called The Water by Tan-Luxe. It doesn’t stain sheets or clothes, smells amazing going on and after it develops, and creates an even tan. I’ll share more in a detailed post just about my self-tanning but in the meantime I linked it below! It seriously is THE BEST (#notsponsored.)
I like to take my vitamins at night because they sometimes make me feel nauseous on an empty stomach in the morning. However I would always forget to take them because we keep vitamins and supplements in the kitchen. So now I have them in an old-person pill case in the same drawer as my toothbrush so I won’t forget. I fill the case up every Sunday as part of my week-start routine (that also can be another post!) It kind of depends on what my health and fitness goals are at the moment but I always take a multivitamin, vitamin D, and magnesium.
Do my best to stay off the iPhone
Yeahhhh. Working on it. The reason I’m a night owl is really because it’s the only uninterrupted time I can spend time on my laptop and phone, in the quiet of late-at-night. I know many, many of you feel the same! My husband on the other hand has slept with his phone in another room for several years now. He also gets to go to an office every day and get some dedicated quiet time so it’s not the same. At least, that’s what I tell myself. I DO have my phone set on Night Shift mode at night to minimize the blue light. I’m counting that as a win, thank you.
Because life is good and I like to say “thank you” to God before calling it a day 🙂
Of course, I also do the basics like brushing my teeth, taking out my contacts, picking up the house, checking my calendar for the next day, etc. But these are things I do with intention to help me have a better tomorrow.
Do you have a nighttime routine? What is it?? Do we do the same things?? Let me know in the comments below 🙂
