Last week I decided to edit out my closet and get rid of pieces that were uninspiring, no longer being worn, or damaged. I was inspired by my recent read; “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown. He had some great analogies using closet organizing for living a life aligned with a “less but better” philosophy. Which I am all about.
This led me to think about my closet staples: what are my “essentials”? How can I pare down to the items that I really love and wear often?
That inspired me to write this post! I love finding out others’ favorites and most worn items because sometimes that leads to me finding my own closet faves and staples. So I hope this post helps you find staple pieces that might currently be missing from your wardrobe – and inspire some new outfits for 2020!
For someone who lives in the desert, I have a surprising amount of sweaters. I might even have more sweaters than tanks or tees! I just find them so comfy and easy to wear. Even in the warmer months, I will often tuck them into cutoffs or wear them while traveling. My favorite cold weather must-have from 2019 is my Sherpa from Amazon. I got it first in army green and then loved that so much I grabbed a khaki colored one, too. You likely see me wearing these all the time in my IG stories! Speaking of Amazon finds, this long leopard print sweater is one of my favorites (and you guys loved it, too!) These are both around $30, so these are amazing budget-friendly options.
Another favorite sweater from this year was this Lululemon wrap sweater. I love the quality that comes with anything by Lululemon, and this was the perfect sweater to throw on after a workout, or with denim and a classic tee! It’s also a convertible sweater and can be worn two ways (I typically wear it the long way.)
Now, let’s talk warm jackets…this down parka by Sam Edelman is amazing. It’s warm, flattering, and I love the faux fur trim on the hood. Last I checked it was 40% off, too!
For a more tailored look, I love this collared camel wool coat from J. Crew. And as I type this blog post, I have this amazing find of a structured cream coat from H&M draped over my shoulders. It’s under $100 and I now wear it all the time.
I’m always running around as a mom, so being comfy is a definite priority for me! However, comfort doesn’t have to mean you sacrifice style 😉 My first two staples for casual looks are leggings from Lululemon. I have two favorites: the Align pant which is insanely soft, and perfect for running errands or a mild workout like yoga or pilates. The second are the Wunder Under Leggings are also great for running errands or a more high-intensity workout. I’m especially loving their “Luxtreme” version (linked below)!
Let’s not forget about the most important comfy clothes: PJ’s! You guys loved shopping cozy PJ sets this year. My favorites for colder months is this long-sleeve set from Nordstrom. I love the short-sleeve version from Nordstrom, as well as this budget-friendly PJ set from Target.
While we’re on the topic of PJ’s, I can’t leave out the best (and budget-friendly) fuzzy criss-cross slippers from Amazon. I tried several different versions of this style of slipper, and these were by far the best! I was between sizes, so I sized up.
I wanted to include a few of my favorite staples for hot weather, especially since that’s what I spend the majority of my time in here in Scottsdale. I’ve owned these Agolde Parker distressed denim shorts for a couple years now, and they’ve remained my favorite pair of shorts.
I often pair these with my Valentino Rockstud sandals in either nude or black. I bought the nude first in 2018 and bought the black this past year. Yes they are pricey but trust me, you will wear them ALL. THE. TIME.
Now this isn’t technically a summer staple as it’s a workout tank that I’ve been wearing in the winter, but this incredibly-priced workout tank from Amazon was definitely one of my top clothing finds of 2019! It’s so soft and rivals any of the pricer brands. Amazon for the win.
Finding the right pair of bottoms can be a challenge, so I wanted to share a few of my tried-and-true faves! First off, the Alana style of denim by J. Brand is my go-to pair. They fit like a dream, I love them both in dark denim and white.
For a dressier look, I like these wide leg pants by Ann Taylor. They are super fun to dress up or down. I have them in white and black!
Pair With Anything Accessories
One of my favorite finds of 2019 was my blush Cuyana tech caryall. Their items are amazing quality and come in gorgeous colors. You can add a monogram for a fun, personalized touch.
These Quay sunnies have been a classic staple for me for years- I own several pairs so I never have to go without them!
Let’s not forget the dainty, gold necklace I got in 2019 with the girls’ initials that I’ve been wearing on the daily from GLDN. The chain length is 18″, and you can use GLDNXMIKA for $5 off your first order.
Classic Shoe Styles
Alright, I can’t share about closet staples and not include shoes! Let’s start with sneakers. For workouts, I love APL’s, and especially these limited edition pink APL shoes I added to the lineup in 2019. 20% of the proceeds even go to Breast Cancer research! For running around town, I love my Veja sneakers (A Meghan Markle favorite) and my Valentino sneakers (these are similar.)
Now for heel : nude, classic silhouettes are my favorites to pair with denim, dresses, or anything really! Probably the best shoe find from this year are these clear strap Schutz heels. I wore these so often that I bought a second pair as a backup! I also love my nude pointy-toe Louboutin pumps– you can never go wrong with a classic pair of Louboutin’s.
There you have it, my closet staples from 2019! Of course I had several new additions to my closet this past year, but when I saw down and thought about it these are what I wore and loved most in 2019. I hope you’ll enjoy looking through these finds. Here’s to a simpler, less cluttered, beautiful 2020!
